Will Power or Won’t Power

Everyone can make a conscious choice to change their life. However, the mind consists of both the conscious and subconscious portions and they don’t always agree.

The supremely powerful subconscious mind might not embrace a new idea and that is when “Won’t Power” comes into play.

We all experience it in some form or another and it is very visible in young children. Put their favourite sweet in front of them, tell them not to eat it and pretend to turn your back.

Willpower verses Won’t Power is part of life and this is where hypnotherapy can help.

Issues such as procrastination, lack of motivation, smoking , weight control, nail biting are just a few examples of where these inner conflicts happen.

Let’s imagine that you want to improve your fitness. Here is a method that you can try by yourself.

Define your goal

Start by defining your goal and be specific about it. For example: “I want to improve my fitness” is vague, whereas “I am going to the gym for forty minutes before work every Monday, Wednesday and Friday until this time next year” is something that you can measure and monitor as the weeks go by.

Decide to be determined

Make a conscious decision to be determined. There will be times when you have had a late night or it is pouring with rain, but you will find it much easier if you have already decided to be determined - no matter what.

Fuel it with emotion

The subconscious mind loves emotion. Think about how you are going to look and feel once you have changed your behaviour. Even imagine your colleagues, friends and family passing positive comments.

Make it easy to succeed

People who sleep well, eat correctly and take regular exercise usually find it easier to be positive and determined.

Prioritise your goals

Your priority on a Monday morning may be to go to the gym, so stick to it. Don’t let it be displaced by shopping. Other activities are for other days.

Don’t beat yourself up

Some goals allow for a degree of tolerance. If you miss a day at the gym, accept it, but ensure that you don’t miss out twice on the trot. Renew your determination and enjoy the benefit even more when you are next there.

Keep reminding yourself

Take a moment or two every day to remind yourself about the positive outcome that you are going to achieve. A simple affirmation, such as “after leaving the gym I feel much stronger, much fitter and better able to handle the stresses of the day”.

Affirmations should be simple, positive, using your own words / speech patterns and that they are in the present tense. Now prove that you have the determination to succeed by creating your own. Avoid downloading someone else’s affirmation.

What is "Normal"?

Some clients say they "just want to be normal”. Everyone’s perception of “normal” is different and therapists tend to avoid the term. Maybe they mean that they feel different, but different from wha
