What is Doom Scrolling?
As the name suggests it is the habit of scrolling through social media and absorbing negative news.
How does it start?
Like most addictions it starts out as an innocent interest in keeping up to date with whatever is happening around us. That in itself is not an issue, but unfortunately most of the news and social media comments are negative or neutral at best.
What effects does it have?
The subconscious mind tends to accept the most common influences as being the norm and then seeks out more of the same for you.
You might not be consciously aware that continuous exposure to negative news is having a direct effect on your mental health. Levels of Anxiety, Stress, Panic and Depression can be triggered quickly.
How do I control it?
These are a few tips that you can follow to reduce the habit of Doom Scrolling.
Don’t pick up your phone first thing in the morning to check social media. Leave it for a while and perhaps choose a dedicated time to check your messages, group activity, etc.
Clearly define how long you are going to spend on social media each day and stick to it.
Concentrate on what you are scrolling through during that dedicated time. Don’t combine it with other things like eating or watching T.V. because you will lose track of what you are looking at and how long it is taking.
Have books, puzzles and positive articles on your phone so that you have something to do while waiting for friends or just having downtime such as sitting in a doctor’s waiting room.
What else can I do?
Also be aware that T.V. news can fuel this habit, so it is best not to have it playing in the background. Your mind will still soak up the content even if you are not looking at the screen. Turn on some of your favourite music instead.
