Will Power or Won’t Power - That is the question
Everyone can make a conscious choice to change their life. However, the mind consists of both the conscious and subconscious portions and they don’t always agree. The supremely powerful subconscious mind might not embrace a new idea and that is when “Won’t Power” comes into play.
We all experience it in some form or another and you can see in young children. Put their favourite sweet in front of them, tell them not to eat it and pretend to turn your back.
Willpower verses Won’t Power is part of life and this is where hypnotherapy can help.
Issues such as procrastination, lack of motivation, smoking cessation, weight control, nail biting are just a few examples of where these inner conflicts happen.
You can expect to raise your willpower and determination to new levels by using the following methods.
Let’s imagine that you want to improve your fitness, but this method is equally powerful when applied to most aspects of life.
Define your goal
Start by defining your goal and be specific about it. For example: “I want to improve my fitness” is vague, whereas “I am going to the gym for forty minutes before work every Monday, Wednesday and Friday until this time next year” is something that you can measure and monitor as the weeks go by.
Decide to be determined
Make a conscious decision to be determined in achieving goal. There will be times when you have had a late night or it is pouring with rain, but you will find it much easier if you have already decided to be determined - no matter what.
Fuel it with emotion
The subconscious mind loves emotion. Think about how you are going to look and feel once you have changed your behaviour. Perhaps imagine hearing positive remarks from your colleagues, friends and family.
Make it easy to succeed
People who sleep well, eat correctly and take regular exercise usually find it easier to be positive and determined.
Prioritise your goal
Your priority on a Monday morning may be to go to the gym, so stick to it. Don’t let it be displaced by shopping. Other activities are for non-gym days.
Don’t beat yourself up
Some goals allow for a degree of tolerance. If you miss a day at the gym, accept it, but ensure that you don’t miss out twice on the trot, renew your determination and enjoy the benefit even more when you are next there.
Keep reminding yourself
Take a moment or two every day to remind yourself about the positive outcome that you are going to achieve. A simple affirmation, such as “after leaving the gym I feel much stronger, much fitter and better able to handle the stresses of the day”. The main rules with affirmations is to keep them simple, positive, using your own words / speech patterns and that they are in the present tense. Now prove that you have the determination to succeed by creating your own. Don’t just download someone else’s affirmation from the internet.

I always invite people to come in for a Free Chat first. During this meeting I describe what to expect and how the therapy works. We then run through any questions that surface and suggest that number of sessions required. I like clients to leave me with all the information that they require. They can then consider our meeting and decide whether to take it further.
I don’t use a “one size fits all” method and all therapy is tailored for the individual.
