Hypnosis for Pain Control

Have you ever wondered why we tend not to notice pain so much when we are happy and relaxed? However, it can be a very different story when we are anxious or depressed. Yet, it is the same pain in both cases, but the mind dictates the degree of discomfort.

Hypnotherapy for pain relief was pioneered by James Esdaile during the 1850’s in India. Modern medicines were just not available to him at that time, but he used Hypno-Surgery in place of anaesthetics. He even performed amputations on injured soldiers using this method.

More recently, Channel 4 broadcast a lengthy programme in April 2006 on hypno-surgery. A patient had a tumour successfully removed from their stomach with no chemical anaesthetics. The only pain relief was hypnotherapy.

Jumping forwards a few years more to a royal baby being brought into the world with Hypno-birthing. Kate Middleton elected to use hypnosis in place of more conventional pain control methods.

The more common uses for this type of hypnosis today are for dental pain, child birth, sometimes arthritis and post-operative pain, although it can be very successful for a whole range of discomforts.

There are several factors that an ethical hypnotherapist should make their clients aware of. These are some of them.

Pain usually exists for a reason. An example could be that we are unlikely to dance with an injured knee. The discomfort prevents us from making things worse. Therefore, it is usually preferable to turn down the pain to a manageable level rather than completely eliminating it.

Hypnotherapists are not doctors so it is unsafe to take away pain without knowing its root.

You should speak to your doctor before working with a hypnotherapist.

You will need to obtain your doctor’s consent before stopping any medications.

You should have periodic check ups with your doctor after hypnotherapy.

Hypnotherapy is not a magic wand, but many people can find lasting relief.
